A 53-year-old Spanish woman sought medical help after starting to suffer from decreased libido. This health disorder, from which 9% -16% of all women suffer, has a significant impact on the quality of life of those suffering from it. Doctors on "A" at the State Institute of Gynocology in Madrid said that while the problem is common and well known, they find it difficult to find a solution.

In an article published in the scientific journal "Maturitas" last June, they stated that "A" and other women who complained about the same problem, mostly with the female hormone estrogen, and sometimes with the male hormone Testosterone hormone would be treated. But not all treatments worked. "The combined treatment with estrogen and testosterone, or testosterone alone, should be customized," it said. The authors of the article suggested further study of the phenomenon in order to improve the quality of medical treatment for sexual dysfunction in women.

It is possible that a new drug called "Boringer - Ingelheim", developed by the German pharmaceutical company, will provide a better solution to the problem. The company presented encouraging results in the development of a new drug called flibanserin: It was originally developed as an antidepressant for psychiatric patients to improve sexual desire in women with disorders in this area. The drug affects the movement of the chemicals serotonin and dopamine (which, among other things, also help improve mood) in the central nervous system of the brain.

The drug is now in its final development phase prior to submitting an application for public marketing. Researchers at the University of North Carolina in the United States tested the drug's effectiveness on 1,378 pre-menopausal adult women who were in stable heterosexual relationships and had libido disorders and were treated with other drugs for at least a month. The study was carried out in 77 university hospitals in the USA and Canada.

The results were presented this month at a conference of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) in Lyon, France. It was shown that giving a 100 mg dose of the drug at bedtime in women improved sexual desire. During the study, which lasted 24 weeks, women treated with the drug reported increases in sexual activity - between 2.8 and 4.5 more activity per month. In the control group, which was treated with a placebo, the number of sexual activity increased by 2.7-3.7 times per month. The difference between the groups was statistically significant.

Mood problems
The remedy haplibenserin reminds you of the beginning of Viagra, which improves sexual function in men. Since Viagra was approved for marketing 11 years ago, it has been a medical and commercial success, and has also led to the development of competing remedies - Cialis and Levitra. Like Flibenserin, which was originally developed as a psychiatric drug, Viagra was originally developed to treat cardiac patients. But not all rush experts crown Haplibenserin as the next huge success. "There are only initial results, but not yet a significant breakthrough," said the head of the neurology department at the "Rambam Medical Center", Prof. Dr. Yoram Vardi.

Modern medicine has difficulty treating sexual dysfunction in women. The problems are: decreased desire, inability to achieve orgasm, sexual arousal problems, and painful intercourse. The researchers hope that treatment with haplibenserin can help libido problems. Today, most treatments for this problem consist of drugs to improve hormonal performance. Doctors also sometimes administer the drug "Seiben", originally used to quit smoking in order to accelerate orgasm in women. So far, however, no effective natural substances have been found that affect sexual functioning in women.
